A 217ft-long structure-free glazed display along the Dbayeh Highway provides a unique new space for dramatic art installations. Waste from nearly three thousand aluminum cut-outs have been reused as façade elements throughout the remaining three volumes, which alternate in tone between light and dark grey and met the project’s challenging budget.Ī range of features in this large new building relate to the scale of the visitor. In addition to creating a luminous icon at night, the new façade reduces solar heat gain from western exposure. Encountered first in the westernmost volume by passersby driving along one of Beirut’s most traveled highways, its silvery façade is an LED backlit laser-cut aluminum screen, with apertures varying in size from less than an inch to roughly 1.5 feet. The internationally acclaimed New York City based firm nARCHITECTS, responsible for the exterior, drew inspiration from the haute couture sold within and specifically from ABC’s recognizable logo transformed into a dress-like pattern enveloping the building’s four volumes. Four new elegant aluminum and concrete volumes undergo horizontal and vertical shifts to respond to a variety of site and zoning constraints, provide a variety of exciting interior spaces, and break down the scale of the 450,000sf building. The previous 200,000sf ABC building has been expanded to create a stunning new ensemble. ![]() The new department store seemingly grows up Dbayeh’s hill to the east, away from the highway. They include the highest infinity pool in the Western Hemisphere set atop 68 stories, a rock-climbing wall, a gym with a swimming pool, squash court, wine library, and a lounge with a bar, fireplace, and co-working space. The 720-foot tower has 483 residences, ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments and over 40,000 square feet of amenities. Then there’s Brooklyn Point in Downtown Brooklyn, which bills itself as the tallest residential building in the borough. Prices for inventory currently available start at $1.7 million. The property will include three courtyard gardens, 18 residences, a co-working lounge, and an area for yoga and meditation. A garden with 40-foot trees at the center of the building doubles as an open hallway, and the walls are made of transparent mesh. Designed by the Brooklyn architecture firm So–IL, it’s a building where residents don’t have to be enclosed inside four walls from the time they enter the lobby to when they reach their apartments. “And it happens to be one of the most striking buildings I have worked on architecturally.”Ĥ50 Warren, nearing completion in Gowanus, is another eye-catching development. “It’s a place where you can come home and let your shoulders down, but you have these insane views of the skyline,” he says.
